Easy Play Ideas for Toddlers, Preschoolers & Elementary Kids: Screen Free Activities for Busy Families
If you have a toddler, preschooler, or elementary aged child, you probably know the question all too well:
“Mom, what can I do?”
And if you’re anything like us, you don’t want to spend an hour searching Pinterest, gathering 17 random supplies, and setting up an activity that your child loses interest in after no I five minutes. You want easy kids activities that actually keep them busy.
That’s exactly why we created WigglePop Play Co. Our ready to play activity boxes, sensory kits, slime, play dough, and dump and play activities are designed to make screen free play easier for busy families. Whether you have a toddler who needs to move, a preschooler who loves sensory play, or an elementary aged kid who needs a creative challenge, here are some easy play ideas you can try at home.
Easy Activities for Toddlers
Toddlers don’t need complicated activities. In fact, some of the best toddler activities are incredibly simple.
At this age, play is all about exploring, moving, transferring, sorting, and pretending.
1. Scoop & Dump Sensory Play
Give your toddler a tray or shallow bin filled with a sensory base and a few simple tools.
Let them:
- Scoop
- Pour
- Transfer
- Fill containers
- Dump everything out
- Sort objects
- Make their own little creations
There doesn’t have to be a “right” way to play.
Our Dump & Play Sensory Bags are designed to make this type of sensory play easier for parents. Simply add the sensory base to your play space, add your play pieces, and let your child explore. Or if you want to make your own we have some inspiration and recipes on our Instagram page @wigglepopplayco
Mom tip: Put the sensory activity on a large tray to help contain the mess and make cleanup easier. Tuff trays are amazing but If you're looking for a budget friendly option a large shallow storage bin or a large drip pan also work great!
2. Toddler Movement Games
If your toddler has a lot of energy, try turning your living room into a mini obstacle course.
Use:
- Painter’s tape
- Floor dots
- Pillows
- Cones
- Stuffed animals
- Bean bags
Try saying:
“Can you jump to the blue spot?”
“Can you crawl like a bear?”
“Can you hop over the pillow?”
Movement based play is a great way to help active toddlers get their wiggles out while still having fun.
If your child loves movement, check out our Kids Activity Boxes for ready to play movement and imaginative play ideas.
Easy Preschool Activities
Preschoolers are at such a fun age because they can follow simple directions while still having huge imaginations.
This is the perfect age for sensory play, pretend play, movement games, and open ended activities.
3. Create Your Own Sensory World
Pick a theme your preschooler loves and build a tiny world around it.
Try:
Dinosaur World:
Add sensory material, toy dinosaurs, rocks, and scoops.
Construction Site:
Add toy trucks, construction vehicles, scoops, and building materials.
Apple Orchard:
Create little apple trees, pretend to pick apples, and make your own orchard.
Farm:
Add farm animals and create a muddy farm sensory play setup.
The best part?
You don’t have to tell your child exactly what to do.
Ask questions instead:
- “What is happening in your world?”
- “Where are the animals going?”
- “Can you build a home?”
- “What should we add next?”
This encourages open ended imaginative play instead of a one and done craft.
WigglePop’s Sensory Kits are made for this type of scooping, sorting, digging, imaginative, and small world play.
4. Make a Simple Sensory Bin
Sensory bins are one of our favorite easy activities for preschoolers because you can change the theme without completely reinventing the activity.
Start with a dry sensory base such as:
- Pasta
- Rice
- Chickpeas
- Cereal
- Kinetic sand
- Other age appropriate sensory materials
Then add a few simple accessories. You don’t need 25 different pieces. Sometimes a scoop, a few containers, and a handful of themed play pieces are enough to create an activity your child will play with again and again.
Looking for less prep? WigglePop sensory products are designed to give busy parents a ready to play activity without requiring a giant supply list, prepping, or planning. I (a busy, tired mom) started this business to take the stress off of busy, tired moms and let them just jump in and make magical memories with their littles.
Activities for High Energy Kids.
Some kids simply need to MOVE. If you have a high energy toddler, preschooler, or elementary aged child, sitting down for a traditional craft isn’t always going to cut it. Try adding movement to play instead.
5. Animal Movement Games.
Call out an animal and have your child move like it.
Try:
🐸 Frog — jump
🐻 Bear — bear crawl
🐍 Snake — slither
🦀 Crab — crab walk
🐰 Bunny — hop
🦘 Kangaroo — big jumps
Make it harder for older kids by creating a movement sequence:
Frog → Bear → Crab → Bunny
Can they remember the entire sequence?
This simple game can become a great indoor activity for kids when you need to burn some energy without leaving the house.
6. Floor Spot Challenge
Place floor spots around a room, then call out different challenges:
“Jump to the red spot!”
“Touch three spots!”
“Can you get from one side of the room to the other without touching the floor?”
For older kids, add challenges like:
- Hop on one foot
- Jump backward
- Carry a bean bag
- Complete the course against a timer
- Create their own obstacle course
This is one of the easiest ways to turn a small space into an active play area.
Our WigglePop Play Boxes are built around this idea of combining movement, creativity, and imaginative play without requiring hours of preparation.
Easy Activities for Elementary Aged Kids
Elementary aged kids may be getting older, but that doesn’t mean they’re done with hands on play.
They just need activities that give them a little more independence and challenge.
7. Create Your Own Challenge
Give your child a few supplies and a challenge instead of specific instructions.
For example:
“Can you build the tallest tower?”
“Can you create an obstacle course?”
“Can you make a dinosaur habitat?”
“Can you design a game and teach me how to play it?”
This type of open ended play is fantastic for encouraging creativity and problem solving.
And here’s the best part: You don’t have to be the activity director, simply let your child take over.
8. Make a Sensory Activity More Challenging
Sensory play isn’t just for toddlers. For older children you can make it more interesting by adding a challenge. Instead of simply scooping and pouring, try:
Color Challenge
“Can you sort everything by color?”
Counting Challenge
“How many pieces can you find?”
Building Challenge
“Can you create a house using only these materials?”
Story Challenge
“Create a scene and tell me what happened.”
Timed Challenge
“You have two minutes to build your creation!”
The same sensory materials can become a completely different activity depending on the child’s age.
That’s one of the reasons we love open ended sensory play.
Easy Screen Free Activities for Kids When You’re Out of Ideas
Sometimes you don’t need a Pinterest worthy activity.
You just need something that buys you 20 minutes of engaged play.
Try creating a small “play invitation.”
Put a few materials together on a tray and let your child discover it.
For example:
A construction invitation:
- Toy trucks
- Construction themed sensory base
- Scoops
- Small containers
- Blocks
An ocean invitation:
- Blue sensory material
- Ocean animals
- Scoops
- Shells
- Containers
An apple orchard invitation:
- Pasta sensory base
- Mini apples
- Pretend trees
- Scoops
- Small baskets
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is to make it easy for your child to start playing.
Why is Open Ended Play So Helpful?
One of our favorite things about open ended play is that there isn’t just one way to use the materials. A sensory kit can become a construction site. A few floor spots can become an obstacle course. A box of play materials can become a pretend restaurant. A sensory bin can become an entire dinosaur world.
That’s why we create WigglePop products around flexible, hands on play rather than activities where there is only one “correct” finished product.
Our goal is simple:
Play more. Plan less.
Need Easy Activities Without All the Prep?
We get it.
As parents, sometimes the hardest part isn’t actually playing with our kids.

The Bottom Line: Kids Don’t Need More Stuff. They Need Better Ways to Play.
You don’t need a house full of toys to keep your kids entertained. Sometimes all you need is a little space, a few simple materials, and an invitation to play.
Give them something to scoop, something to build, something to move, something to imagine. Then take a step back and see where their creativity takes them. The best kids activities aren’t always the ones with the most instructions, They are the ones that make kids want to keep playing.
✨ Play more. Plan less. Wiggles encouraged.
